We’ve recently had some questions from customers asking the best way to install a Drag Link, so we have put together this helpful guide.

The following image shows the Pitman Arm, Drag Link and Knuckle Arm (Boomerang Arm) in position. When the steering wheel is turned the Pitman Arm moves the Drag Link which transfers the rotating motion from the steering box via the Knuckle Arm to the wheels so that the vehicle can be steered.

Drag Link Setup

Here are some reasons that these parts may need replacing:

  • When the ball on the Pitman Arm or the Knuckle Arm (Boomerang) becomes worn or at worst loose in it's casting (NEVER weld the ball in place) - Replace the Pitman or Knuckle Arm.
  • When the internal components of the draglink become worn or broken and the play cannot be taken up by the adjuster plugs – Replace the Draglink and/or the associated connecting part.
  • Vague, loose or wandering steering will result when there is excessive play in any of these components.

Please note:
There will be, and should be, a certain amount of play in the drag link, this is due to the spring pre-load setting that is essential for correct installation.

Removing the Drag Link

Removing the Drag Link
  • Disconnect the Drag link from the Pitman Arm and Knuckle Arm
  1. Using a screwdriver, remove the two cotter pins and plugs on both sides of the Drag Link.
  2. Remove the Drag Link.
  • Inspect Parts for Wear or Damage
