How to check or replace a blown fuse
If your stereo goes dead, windows stop working, a light stops working or if your truck won’t start, it can often result to a blown fuse. Replacing or checking a fuse is as easy as changing a light bulb. You can usually change fuses yourself, easily and with very little expense on the Toyota Hilux Pickup, Hilux Surfs and Land Cruisers.
Before you open or work on a fuse box, be sure that your vehicle’s ignition is turned off.
Where is the fuse box located on a Toyota?
Many vehicles have two fuse boxes, one under the bonnet which usually houses the engine fuses, and the other is found under the dashboard for the interior electrical fuses. On a Toyota they are 3 main fuses that are common to blow, the mini fuses, the standard size fuses & the slow blow fuses.
How do you remove a fuse?
The easiest way to remove any blade type fuse is by using the original blade fuse puller found inside one of the fuse boxes. If you do not have a fuse puller available then often tweezers or needle nose pliers will often do the trick. Be careful not to damage the fuse upon removal.
The larger 60 amp, 80 amp & 100 amp slow blow fuses are secured with a bolt underneath the fuse box, simply un-bolt the fuse box housing from the body to access the bolts from underneath the fuse box.
How to check if a fuse has blown?
Vehicle fuses can often be inspected without having to remove a fuse by checking if the fusible link wire is broken, this can be done through the top or side of the fuse casing. Usually it is very obvious to tell the difference between a good or blown fuse but sometimes it may require removing all the fuses one by one to find the broken one as they can be obscure. How to replace a blown fuse?
Never replace a fuse with one that has different amperage than the original. The new fuse has to be the same colour and size as the one you’re replacing. Often the fuse box will have an illustration depicting the amperage of the fuse required, alternatively refer to the vehicles workshop or owners manual.
Always remember never to turn the ignition on when a fuse has been removed, insert a new fuse by placing the replacement fuse in the correct position and pushing into place. Before turning on the ignition, pop the fuse box cover back on ensuring all tools or spanners are safely removed from the engine bay and fuse box.
