For those of you that are new to the Toyota Surf, we have put together a friendly guide on how the Surfs came to be. Along with information about how they have evolved and a few interesting facts that we have learnt over the years.

In the early 80’ Toyota was keen to create a passenger version of the pickup so joined forces with Winnebago to create the Toyota Trekker. After its success, they decided to create their very own version which became known as the Surf and was launched around 1984. With this new version, the aim was to remodel the basic Hilux, creating a short-bed pick up with a removable top that would give it a sportier appearance. These changes have helped to create the Hilux Surf we have come to know and love today!

The Generation Game

The Toyota Surfs have evolved over the years with variations being generalised as the Gen 1, Gen 2 or Gen 3 (although those are not actual model codes). As well as the body the suspension is probably the main thing which has changed overtime to give the vehicle a smoother ride.

Toyota Surf 1st GenerationGeneration 1 (Gen 1) - 1984-1989

This is the earliest of the Surfs and generally, has a removable rear canopy.

Engine: Petrol and Diesel Variations
Rear Suspension: Leaf Springs
Front Suspension: Independent torsion bar Front Suspension (IFS). Though some earlier models have Leaf Springs.

Toyota Surf 2nd GenerationGeneration 2 (Gen 2) - 1989-1995

These Surfs are also known as the 130 series (KZN130, VZN130, LN130 and the 4Runner). The car body was enlarged on this model. The rear canopy is now part of the body and it has a tailgate that folds down.

Engine: Petrol and Diesel Variations
Rear Suspension: Coil Springs
Front Suspension: Independent torsion bar Front Suspension (IFS)

Toyota Surf 3rd GenerationGeneration 3 (Gen 3) - 1995-2002

These are the 185 series Surfs (KZN185, RZN185 and VZN185). This model moved away from the original Hilux body. The lighting and interior etc was changed to give a more city feel, and the rear tailgate door hinges up like a hatchback car.

Engine: Petrol and Diesel Variations
Rear Suspension: Coil Springs
Front Suspension: Coil Over

Toyota Surf 4th GenerationGeneration 4 (Gen 4) - 2002-2009

This is the 210 series Surfs (RZN215W, KDN215W, VZN215W, GRN215W and TRN215W).

Engine: Petrol and Diesel Variations
Rear Suspension: Coil Springs
Front Suspension: Coil Over

Generation 5 (Gen 5) - 2009 onwards

This is a very rare model as it is rarely imported (we have yet to even see one!). The range of The Land Cruiser is the only SUV being built since that date.

We do hope this quick guide will help some customers, particularly those new to the Hilux Surf.
